What is a micro system?
A micro system is the smallest type of stereo. They usually come in one piece, with moveable speakers. They can offer most the functions you would find on a larger unit, including a CD player, radio tuner, tape deck and even MP3 connections. A micro system is the best choice for someone who doesn't want to take up too much space with their music player.

- Sound quality Power output is measured in Watts RMS. You can get a good idea of the power of the stereo speakers from their wattage- anything from 1 watt per channel and upward. Generally the higher the number the better
- What can it load? Nearly all machines will be able to play CDs, but some may be able to support other formats. For example, it may have a tape deck or mini-disc player. Some stereos even offer CD-R, which enables you to record onto CD. If you listen to MP3 tracks, you might want to find a system that can connect to your portable MP3 player, or even play MP3s recorded onto a blank CD.
- DAB radio? A HiFi micro system will likely have a radio tuner capable of picking up FM and AM signals. Some will be able to receive digital radio - a new way of listening to radio that offers much more channels with crystal clear sound.
