As World War II rages around them, nurses such as Hana (Juliette Binoche) do all they can to help the struggling soldiers on Italian soil. One soldier in particular captures her attention; with a mysterious background and no memory of his past, or even his name, he is in particularly bad condition and is sent to a monastery to get more attentive care. Eventually revealed to be the Hungarian map maker Count Laszlo de Almasy (Ralph Fiennes), the patient’s history unfolds throughout the film. In a vortex of passion and betrayal, the Sahara Desert provides the backdrop to Laszlo’s adventures with Geoffrey Clifton (Colin Firth) and his wife Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas). Winner of 9 Oscars, The English Patient makes it easily into the best movies of the 90’s and it is an essential DVD on every film lover’s shelf.
