About us

Our story began in Manchester in 1886, with a man called Fred. Fred had two things: a bright idea, and a cracking beard. He’d been working in a cotton mill, like many people in the city at the time, when he noticed that the cotton was being trundled around in baskets. This gave him an idea for a business. Fred wanted to start importing the cane for the baskets from abroad. And so we, Fred Aldous Ltd, were born.

We’ve grown a fair bit over the last 125 years, but we still do what Fred, aka Fred the First, did all those years ago: supply materials to people who make things. We started off selling just three products (cane, willow and yeast) to the cotton traders and master brewers of Manchester. We now stock more than 25,000 products and sell to customers all over the world.

Inspiring new ideas and encouraging people are values that Fred the First instilled in the company when it all started. We’ve flourished thanks to these simple ideals, and we’re pretty sure that’s why we’re still a family-run business after all these years. Five generations of the Aldous family have led us over the last century or so, and each generation has had the same passion for craftsmanship. We just love those people who have that urge to pick up a pencil, brush or needle and want to create. If you’re one of these people, we salute you. We figure that if we want to be around in another 125 years, we need to keep encouraging people like you to try new ways of making things.

That’s why we’re constantly developing fresh ideas and coming up with new schemes, to make sure we can keep providing the right tool or material, whatever project you might be working on.

This first 125 years has been a blast. We reckon the next 125 will be even better.

Delivery rates and timescales

Express delivery £7.95 Order by 3pm* (Monday-Thursday) for next day delivery

We use 1st class Royal Mail for standard deliveries and DPD for express deliveries.

We ship items Monday - Friday. Orders placed between Friday afternoon and Sunday are shipped on the next working Monday.

Delivery locations and exceptions

We ship to all areas of the UK. Deliveries may take one extra day for the Scottish highlands and offshore UK locations.

Requirements to sign for delivery

Express deliveries will require a signature.

Missed delivery

If a delivery is missed, the parcel courier or Royal Mail post person will leave you a card to let you know how to re-arrange your delivery.

Returns & Cancellation Policy

Is your purchase not quite right?

That’s no problem. All of our Tesco Partners offer the same Tesco direct policy as a minimum, the full details of which can be found hereReturns Policy page.

You can return any unwanted goods up to 90 days from the date of dispatch. Postage charges are not refunded for unwanted goods.

Digital Audio Players, Digital Cameras, Photo Frames, Camcorders, Hard Drives, USB Devices, Laptops, Desktops, Netbooks, Tablets, Satellite Navigation Systems and Games Consoles. 14 days from delivery
Everything else 28 days from delivery

Charges for returns

If you change your mind and wish to return your item you will need to pay for the cost of return. Of course, if the item you have received is damaged or faulty, we will cover the cost of the return.

Returns guidelines

If you change your mind about an item, please return it with all original components and packaging. If you are unable to return the item in its original packaging, please ensure the item is securely packaged to avoid any damage.

Is your purchase faulty or damaged?

We do our best to make sure everything works perfectly, but if it doesn’t, please contact us. Within the first 28 days we will issue a replacement item to you. Outside of the first 28 days we will be able to advise on the options to repair, replace or refund your item.
