Our story began in Manchester in 1886 with a man called Fred. Fred had two things – a bright idea and a cracking beard. He had been working in a cotton mill, like many people in the city at the time, when he noticed that the cotton was being trundled around in baskets. This gave him the idea for a business – he wanted to start importing the cane for the baskets from abroad. We, Fred Aldous Ltd, were born out of that idea.
We’ve grown a fair bit over the last 125 years but we still do what Fred, aka Fred the First, did all those years ago – supply materials to people who make things. We started off with just three products (cane, willow and yeast) selling to the cotton traders and master brewers of Manchester. Now we stock more than 25,000 products and sell to customers all over the world.
Inspiring new ideas and encouraging people are values that Fred the First instilled in the company when we began. We’ve flourished thanks to these simple ideals and we’re pretty sure that’s why we’re still a family run business after all these years. Five generations of the Aldous family have lead us over the last century or so and each generation has had the same passion for craftsmanship. We just love those people who have that urge to pick up a pencil, brush or needle and want to create. If you’re one of these people we salute you. And we figure that if we still want to be around in another 125 years we need to keep encouraging people like you to try out new ways of making things.
That’s why we’re constantly developing fresh ideas and coming up with new schemes. And that’s why we can provide the right tool or material for whatever project you might be working on.
This first 125 years has been a blast. We reckon the next 125 will be even better!

Handling time for orders is normally less than 24 hours and we'll inform you if it's going to be any longer. Standard delivery orders will arrive within 7 working days and Express delivery orders will arrive next working day when received by us before 1pm.
If you are not happy with your item, send it back to us within 90 days of ordering and we’ll happily refund the value of the goods. Postage charges will not be refunded on unwanted items. To be eligible for a refund the goods must be unopened or unused in any way at all. We must be able to resell the goods for full value once returned to us.
If returns arrive in poor or unsalable condition the refund will not be available. You are responsible for ensuring the goods are returned to us. Fred Aldous Ltd will not be liable for returns that are lost in the post or lost for any other reason.

Damaged/Faulty goods - Customer pay return postage charges which are refunded by Fred Aldous on receipt of goods
Returns Packaging Guidelines
Customer must ensure packaging is suitable when goods are returned. Fred Aldous will not offer a refund for returns damaged in transit.
Customers wishing to exchange products are responsible for return postage charges and will be liable for postage charges to cover the delivery of the exchanged goods.
Express Deliveries & Courier Deliveries
Next day (Express) deliveries and deliveries sent via courier will need to be signed for at the point of delivery by the recipient.
Express deliveries will have tracking codes assigned and will be emailed to the customer once dispatched.
The customer must pay again for delivery if the initial attempt is missed by the customer. The customer can change or cancel the delivery at any point up to dispatch. Once dispatched deliveries can't be cancelled or changed.
