The best foods to eat for breastfeeding

During the first few months of your baby’s life, breastfeeding is the best protection against illness you can provide. Breast milk is a source of highly absorbable minerals, antioxidants and other antibacterial substances that help protect your baby against both bacterial and viral infection.

But it’s important to look after yourself, too. A healthy diet while breastfeeding helps to supply you with the energy you need, and your baby with the vital nutrients he needs.

Make time for breakfast

You may have been up with your baby several times in the night and you’ll need a restorative breakfast. Porridge is a guaranteed pick-me-up for exhausted mums.
Try this: Add some blueberries to your porridge for sustained energy throughout the morning.

Brilliant broccoli

Eating at least five portions of fruit and veg a day will ensure that both of you are getting plenty of immune-boosting antioxidants to keep you healthy. Broccoli is a true superfood packed full of vitamin C and folate. 
Try this: To accompany a main dish, lightly steam broccoli; or stir fry it with olive oil and soy sauce, or eat it raw with houmous.

Be smart, go bananas

Try to avoid snacking on cakes, biscuits and chocolate bars, which are high in refined sugars and fat. It is possible to snack healthily. Bananas are packed with mood-boosting ingredients so make a handy snack, while fruit smoothies provide instant energy and are quick and easy to prepare.
