Fun for under-5s at The Science Museum
Should the weather take a turn for the worst this summer, and you’re looking for a day out that doesn’t mean being stuck outside, The Science Museum in London is a good choice. Although you might think it wouldn’t appeal to young children, the museum holds a nice surprise on its lower level: an interactive gallery called The Garden that’s designed specifically for little ‘uns aged from three and upwards.
Through this multi-sensory environment, children can discover and explore the basics of science through play. The main areas are based around themes: construction, water, light and sound, and in these sections they can experience floating and sinking sensations, shadows and reflections, hear music and play with giant building blocks. Even babies love being stimulated by these things, so you can carry your smallest family member down there with you to enjoy the various sounds and sensations. For toddlers and older children, this is a fantastic way of learning through play, while socialising with other inquisitive would-be Einsteins!
You’ve also got several options when it comes to feeding your family here. Unusually, you are allowed to eat and drink in any uncarpeted area of the museum and you can bring your own food with you to enjoy in one of the three picnic areas. Alternatively, you’ll find sandwiches, salads, soups and hot meals at the Revolution Café, or a fuller meal at the Deep Blue family restaurant, which serves pizzas, pasta and healthy children’s foods.
