Boost your self-esteem

It might not feel like this at the moment, but as a mum there will be days when you’ll have some spare hours and may even feel at a bit of a loose end over what to do with them. Why not use that time to make yourself feel fantastic – emotionally, psychologically and physically.

Boost your self-esteem

Always dreamed of speaking Spanish or learning how to salsa? Stop thinking of yourself as ‘just a mum’ and sign up for classes now – you could be just one evening a week away from fulfilling your ambition. Places like The Make Lounge offer all sorts of classes and one-day sessions in things like jewellery-making and writing. Also try visiting your local adult education centre or go to hotcourses.com. Or improve your career prospects – check out http://www.learndirect.co.uk/. If you’re stuck for childcare, don’t worry, many colleges provide a crèche.

Refresh your wardrobe

Can’t find a thing to wear? Or just bored with your look? Treat yourself to a new outfit – but step out of your comfort zone and go for a new style, or a new colour. You’ll be amazed at how a few new pieces can instantly transform your whole wardrobe – and your outlook. Take a look at www.clothingattesco.com for affordable, stylish trends.

Meditate or just take some quiet time

Meditate or just sit quietly and think about how you are really feeling. It’s surprising how few of us do this. But after having a baby, it’s very important to keep a check on your sense of wellbeing. Postnatal depression is a common condition that affects one in 10 women who have had a baby and it can last for weeks or several months and, in rare cases, for years when it isn’t treated. If you often feel teary or emotionally drained and feel that you can’t cope, it is really important that you voice any concerns to your doctor, midwife and your partner. Don’t try to get through it alone. Meditation or quiet time is the perfect way to really listen to your inner feelings.

Volunteer yourself

Your free hours could be someone else’s lifeline – so why not volunteer to help your favourite charity? Whether it’s campaigning to raise funds or manning a phone line, helping others can be hugely rewarding. Find out what’s available in your area at http://www.doit.org.uk/.

Get active

Working out is a great way to generate feel-good chemicals, as well as to banish that baby bulge. Experts recommend at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, of moderate to vigorous exercise*. Book yourself into a fitness class, or tempt some friends to join you for a regular game of tennis, cross-country run, cycle ride or speed walk.

Set yourself a challenge

You don’t have to climb Everest to feel proud of yourself. There are plenty of everyday challenges – decorating your toddler’s bedroom, cooking a soufflé for the first time, calling an old friend you haven’t spoken to for years – that can be just as demanding. So set yourself a goal – and go for it!
