Background

History

This Mâcon Villages is sourced from the Southern part of the Macon region, where the limestone slopes give good sun exposure and air circulation. The Chardonnay grapes achieve a tropical character from the combination of clean warm air and limestone soil. The Co-op has 352 members with just over 1000 hectares under vine. The winery employs a team of oenologists who work in conjunction with the growers in the vineyards to advise on canopy management, pruning and whether green harvesting is required. If growers comply with the oenologists’ advice, they are able to earn up to +30% extra on the price of their grapes, so effectively they are incentivised in order to maximise grape quality. It is a system that benefits the vines, the grower, and ultimately the wine!

Almost typical Macon Villages

This review is for the 2010 vintage

It is usually a joy to savour the fruit, the tang and the mellow softness of a Macon but this one just missed that magic combination. It was dry, yes, metallic and sharp, yes, but lacked for me the complexity of stone fruit that softens a god Macon into a complex taste to be ruminated on and drive into further dimensions. For the price not bad value but no real terroir or identity. Despite being vacuumed and sealed lost more interest overnight - a one night wine .

Nice, good body but no better than the better Australian Chardonnays. Wouldn't pay full price for it though.

This is one of the best chardonnays I have ever tasted. Quality, body, and flavour are of the highest quality. I'll definitely be buying a lot more of it.
