91/100 in Parker’s Wine Buyer’s Guide, this fantastic wine has berry and spice overtones with a vanilla finish.

This wine is ideal for drinking now but can be kept for up to 3 years
Bodegas del Virgen was founded in 1953. it has a storage capacity of 11 million litres in stainless steel vats and oak barrels. In recent years it has been equipped with the latest wine-making technology, allowing them to maintain consistently high standards. They have 2,200 hectares of vines with a good range of international and native grape varieties like Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. Their oldest vines date from the year 1906 and help create wines of superb quality and intensity.
Felipe Mendoza - Joaquín Perez
D.O.Cariñena, formed in 1932, is the second-oldest demarcated region in Spain. It belongs to the great wine-making belt of northern Spain and is located between Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Priorat. It has ideal conditions with lots of sunshine and the cierzo wind and its tradition in wine-making dates back to times of the Romans. The city of Cariñena itself was conferred the title of "city" by King Alfonso XIII owing to its quality wines, which are still considered to be some of Spain's finest.

We had a couple of bottles of this as part of a mixed case and I didn't really expect much from it it as we've never been particular fans of spanish wine - but WOW! this is one of the most delicious red wines we've tasted in a long long time. I should really be keeping quiet about this as it will probably run out before long (just ordered 2 cases of it), but that would be selfish. It's on offer just now but to my mind it would still be a bargain at the full price.

First tried this wine at xmas 2012 on offer at £7.99 and was so pleased at its quality. Still in my opinion good value at £11.00.

This wine is one of the best, reasonably priced reds on the Tesco list. Consistent quality, easy to drink, keeps well. Recommended.

A little too "jammy" for my taste to be one of my top favourites but definitely worth having a few bottles if on offer, to provide drinkable variety.

I thought I was getting a 2011 and was surprised when it was 2001 and I was worried that it might be a bit 'chewy and old school' however it is deliciously rounded, lovely friut and a delight. Great at the half price offer too. I'll be getting more if there's any left.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT VALUE GRAN RESERVA. FULL BODIED AND FULL OR FLAVOUR. FOR ME IT COMES A CLOSE SECOND TO THE FAUSTINO BLACK LABEL AND THE HIGHER PRICED CAMPO VIEJO RESERVA BUT AT THE TESCO PRICE THESE ARE ALL VERY WELL PRICED QUALITY SPANISH WINES. A DIFFERENT TASTE FROM OTHER WELL KNOWN GRAPES BUT FOR ME SPANISH IS MY CHOICE EVRY TIME.

Tried our first bottle last night (04/02/13), it was quickly followed by a second bottle. It was delicious, smooth, very easy on the pallete. No harsh after taste`s , would reccommend this to anyone.

The wine is a little thin and not that smooth. We usually drink Rioja but have just tried Aguila Carinena 2007 and rate this much higher than the Gran Fabrica 2001.

For once, I could actually smell, taste, appreciate the experts' recommendations. For its more than ten years of age, this wine is surprisingly unoaky and fresh, without an odd aftertaste. A real discovery.

Another wine offered at "half price" but again not value for that. A nice wine to have sat watching a film but would not serve with a meal if trying to impress. Distant fruit and a hint of spice make a well balanced wine if somewhat light.

When I opened the first bottle I must say I was disappointed as the wine tasted very ordinary and I thought it must be too old and now past its best. However this bottle turned out almost to be another wine as the remaining bottles were really excellent, full of body and a mingling of flavours and would be enjoyed by even the most discerning.

Once allowed to breathe this wine was silky smooth with leathery, oaky and vanilla notes with ripe plum fruits - a little over ripe for my liking

Bought a case of this as a present for my son - but ended up 'sharing' a couple of bottles over Christmas ! I must admit that this is not usually my first choice of wine but I was more than happy with this - so was he ! Very smooth and easy drinking wine - at a fantastic pre Christmas price.

I enjoyed this wine. It has hidden depths of flavours and works well on its own or with a variety of different foods. It is not a wine that I would go out of my way to find, but I would buy it again if it was sensibly priced.

Have bought several cases of this over the past couple of years, when it is on special offer, and it never fails to impress. Lovely aroma, soft and very smooth. Not quite as much vanilla as a good Rioja but delightful nevertheless with a lovely lingering finish. Has to be one of the best wines available for a fiver anywhere.

Everything it promised to be and more. At this price it's a steal. This is a delicate wine, not too full-bodied or over-powering, with beautiful berries and lovely finish. Stock-up while it's half price.

Tanins softened and velvet, mouth filling fruit, perfect with roast beef, roast lamb, steak or a big bolognese made with smoked bacon, chicken livers and lots of freshly ground nutmeg along with the usual suspects. Coming to the end of its storage now I think, so buy it and drink it and enjoy it. I liked it so much that I ordered a case to be delivered to my daughter, who shares my wine tastes as a Christmas present. The price at 50% off was amazing. Don't delay, order today.

I buy a lot of wine across the price range of £4 to £25, especially from Tesco I had great expectations for this wine but found it didn't deliver. Not much body and no discernable vanilla overtones. It was very ordinary. It must be some time since Mr Parker scored it!

I like this wine but am tired of Tesco telling me its half price or even better than half price. Whatever u think of Parker it is incredible that a wine that scored 91 is available at this price. It needs food & responds well to being decanted. In a blind tasting my friendly experts thought it was an £8 wine so no complaints on value just Tesco's marketing.

The 2001 Gran Fabrica Carinena appeared in Tesco's pre-Christmas wine brochure under the heading of " less than half price ". Having experienced excellent wines from this region before, I took the risk of orderering a dozen despite the very low £5 / bottle price tag. It has not dissappointed. The 60% Tempranillo , 20% Grenache, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon blend well and have produced a mature, well rounded, full bodied red. It has pleasing red berry fruits, spice and tobacco notes on the nose and a big, mature, fruity taste with smooth vanilla finish. Lovely!! It goes well with hearty meat dishes like roast lamb, chorizo and sausage casserole and mature hard cheeses. It benefits considerably from breathing at room temperature for several hours before consumption and I would recommend that this is done. I would definitely buy this wine again.

As someone of fairly modest means It is rare that I can afford to buy wines with 10 yrs + age ( I firmly believe that red wines become far more velvety and silky after at least 10yrs of age) so I didnt think twice about buying a case of this 2001. I wasn't disapointed, it is indeed silky smooth and in fact sometimes it is a little bit too drinkable! It definately wont be the last case that i buy!

I imagine that it is very rare if not unique to find a vintage wine with a Parker score at a price like this. It is smooth and medium to full bodied with a great taste from the outset. I originally sent for 1 case then, after tasting, sent for 2 more.

This wine fills the palate with fruit; it's all red berries and damsons. It is hard to believe that this quality of wine is available at such a modest price. Decant and allow it to breathe for at least a couple of hours to open up the full depth of mouth-filling flavour. Friends, who enjoy expensive Rioja and Bordeaux wines, think that I have been serving them wine costing at least £25 -£30 per bottle. I just tell them that it's a 2001 Gran Reserva that earned 91 Parker points, and leave the rest to their imaginations! Try it with roast lamb, pheasant or partridge.

full rich taste... with magnificent flavours throughout. This will serve well with and rich meat meal, and you'll come back for more. I will admit that I would not pay full price for this, only the sale price When it is 30 or so a case, it is VERY much worth it Every bottle I have had has been perfect. Word of warning, do not confuse it with Gran Fabrica Cariena (non reserve) because the non reserve is horrible

I thought this wine was extraordinary. Very deep vibrant garnet red colour with no sign of ageing yet. The nose is full of fruit, a bit of spice and vanilla. On the palate blackberry, blackcurrant and plums with a background of delicate vanilla indicating well integrated oak. Smooth and juicy and moreish. This is a very good example of the new Spanish style, no longer hard and dried out. I first tasted this as part of a mixed case, but then sought it out specifically and have since bought 3 dozen more! Well done Tesco
